Anthony Richardson is back at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts.
The second-year quarterback started for the Colts on Sunday against the New York Jets and will start the remainder of the 2024 season, head coach Shane Steichen told reporters Wednesday.
Richardson, drafted fourth overall in the 2023 draft by Indianapolis, was on the bench after the Colts lost to the Houston Texans in Week 8. He completed just 31.3% of his passes for 175 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the Texans, gaining 45 yards rushing, but likely ejected himself for one play in the third quarter. He later admitted that this may have caused him to become even more angry. Of fatigue.
After the loss, Joe Flacco regained the starting spot. The veteran helped the Colts win the first two games of the season, but he wasn’t a much better option at quarterback. In his last two games, he threw for 451 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions, but the Colts lost two straight to the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, dropping their record to 4-6.
Steichen was initially adamant that Flacco would remain the team’s starting quarterback even after the loss. But on Wednesday, he changed his tune and said he’s seen Richardson’s attention to detail improve during practice.
“Over the past two weeks, he has made progress in those areas.” Steichen said.
Richardson completed just 44.4 percent of his passes for 958 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions in six games, posting a passer rating of 57.2. He also rushed for 242 yards and a touchdown after returning from a shoulder injury that cut his rookie season short after just four games.
