India’s first deepwater transport port will progress in Kerala
India’s first Deepwater Jranshipment Port at Vizhinjam has officially begun operation and has marked a major moment for the country’s maritime sector. In July 2024, the port welcomed its first mother ship, MV San Fernando.
What makes Vizhinjam even more special is that it was India’s first Green Field Port project, launched by the state government. With an investment of over Rs 18,000, this is one of the largest port ventures ever made in the country, all built under the PPP model.

Why is vizhinjam important?
Located along the main international transport routes, Vizhinjam offers great advantages. It can significantly reduce ship transport times. Because it is a natural deep sea port, it is built to easily handle large cargo and container ships. This is something that a very few India’s ports can boast about.
The port is expected to provide a major boost to Kerala’s economy, not just cargo and ships. From creating jobs and drawing out investments to turning Kerala into a major trade hub, Vizhinjam is all set to link India more strongly with Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
