‘Agatha All Along’ review: Kathryn Hahn conjures up pure, witchy fun

Agatha All Along It’s like a witch’s potion specially concocted to make me giddy with joy, and with ingredients including magical trials, rock songs, and Patti LuPone herself, how could it not be?

The latest MCU TV series will be released in 2021 WandaVisionfocuses on Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) nosy neighbor-turned-witch nemesis Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and takes its title from her Emmy-winning opening theme song.

but, Agatha All Along The series ventures into superhero sequel territory. Showrunner Jac Schafer ( WandaVision) carves its own path in the path of the witch. Yes, you can still find the genre mishmash that follows on from its predecessor. A less extreme character, the witch, also struggles to recover what has been taken from her. Agatha All AlongWith its focus on an underdog group, it also brings in some new and quirky characters to the MCU, and her chemistry with Agatha is one of the show’s greatest strengths.

Agatha All Along kick off WandaVisionA parody of the TV show Windsor, this time starring Agatha rather than Wanda, who, with her scarves, hard-boiled detective attitude and Delco accent, looks just like Kate Winslet. Easttown Mare(In the fake credits scene, the show Agnes of Westview.

But Agatha’s brutal murder mystery is merely a warped remnant of Wanda’s curse placed on Westview. In fact, she is completely powerless after her battle with Wanda.Heart StopperJoe Locke helps her escape from her magical prison. (Yes, Agatha All Along Locke’s character’s name is purposely obfuscated, and he covers his lips in silence when introducing himself – trust me there’s a witchy reason for it.

Teen (as Agatha calls him) is seeking Agatha’s help in finding the Witch’s Way, a legendary path filled with deadly trials, and whoever reaches the end of it will receive what they desire most. For Agatha, it’s the power that Wanda siphoned off during the battle. For Teen… well, just like his name suggests, Agatha All Along A revealing play, but before this unlikely pair can find their way into witchcraft, they must organize a coven.

It’s no surprise that Hahn returns to the role of Agatha Harkness with a fine performance — she dominates the screen with one twist of her many capes or a frustrated groan at the sympathy of those around her — but the chemistry between Hahn and Agatha’s new coven is ultimately superb. Agatha All Along‘s greatest strength and surprise.

Leading Agatha’s list of allies is Lilia Cardell (Patti LuPone), a psychic with a slightly wayward personality. (Yes, Patti LuPone playing a witch is as fun as it sounds.) Joining her is Jennifer Cale (Sasheer Zamata), a potions witch whose sarcastic personality matches Agatha’s own disdain. Alice Wu Gulliver (Ali Ang), the daughter of a mysterious rock star who mysteriously disappeared while trying to find her way in witchcraft, brings with her a stubborn shell of defense and skepticism of magic. And an unexpected addition to this group is Agatha’s Westview neighbor, Sharon (Debra Jo Rupp). Though she’s not a witch (rather, she’s there to fill the coven’s quota), her constant confusion is a welcome contrast to the centuries-old witches’ cold approach to magic.

Teena also serves as a great foil to the coven. His fanaticism and passionate dedication to the witchcraft path breaks down the grudges the other witches (mainly Agatha) have against each other. Frankly, he also functions as a stand-in for the audience because Won’t Are you excited to spend time with this group of witches and watch the actors play off each other?

summary Agatha All AlongThe witch in is Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), a powerful witch who first meets Agatha after she is put under a spell and holds a dagger to her throat. Clearly there is some kind of history there, and judging by the crackling chemistry between Hahn and Plaza, I’d bet they were former lovers. Agatha All Along To be carried as “The gayest Marvel project ever” I hope my thinking is correct.

Rio and Agatha aren’t the only witches with troubled pasts; every member of the coven has experienced some kind of pain or setback; otherwise, why would they be so desperate to take on the life-threatening witch path? Watching the women open up about their traumas (many of which are hinted at through some truly eerie hallucinations) is a pretty moving (and sometimes heavy-handed) experience. These backstories add depth to the group’s otherwise hilarious interactions, with the kind of fast-talking, foul-mouthed insults that only happen when you’re in a room with bigwigs.

The Witch’s Way Agatha All Along

Each challenge is not only a chance for the witches to prove their mettle, Agatha All Along The weekly trial format offers even more genre-crossing fun.

Take, for example, a risky pit stop at a seaside mansion that seems straight out of a movie. Big Little LiesOr a risky visit to a ’70s recording studio. These trials come with their own magical costume changes, WandaVisionThe changes in each episode are great fun, too, especially in the multiple times singing becomes a life-saving tool. Seriously, watching Hahn and LuPone lead a group of witches is enough to make you want to punch the air with excitement.

The excitement may start slowly Agatha All AlongIn the early solicitation stages of , it was on a roll, but by the end of the first four episodes sent to critics for review, it had reached its peak: This is a Marvel show that isn’t afraid to be camp, quirky and weird, discarding the “eight-hour movie” format of other MCU series and embracing the episodic power of television. WandaVision It’s incredibly well-controlled, and when you add to that the dream team of Hahn and her coven of witches, you get a truly magical show.
