The European Commission has launched burner phones and stripped laptops to staff visiting the US over concerns that treating visitors to the country is becoming a security risk. Financial Times. And that it has serious consequences for the US position as a way of sliding into fascism under Donald Trump, which the president announced on Monday that he has no plans to follow the plan to accidentally send back a man who was mistakenly sent back to El Salvador prison.
Officials who spoke with the Financial Times said new guidance for EU staff traveling to the US include recommendations that they don’t carry personal phones and that they have “special sleeves” (probably Faraday cages) that can turn off burner phones when they enter the country and protect them from electronic snooping. US border agents often claim the right to confiscate the phone and look into someone’s personal device before being allowed to enter the US
There have been several reports of researchers denied access to the United States. This includes a French scientist who reportedly stopped last month due to a critical text message about Trump. Other travelers from countries such as Australia and Canada have reported being detained under horrific circumstances.
President Trump has taken office less than three months later, but has already managed to alienate all America’s closest allies. Sometimes that alienation came in the form of a threat of invading sovereign territory, like Canada, Greenland and Panama. It’s also like “fucking you” blankets to American geopolitical allies with tariff threats. And at the border, every day terrifying tales of people trying to enter the United States, where people who were not abused before Trump came back to power in January are about to enter the United States.
All of that confusion and uncertainty forced those who previously welcomed a trip to the US to rethink their plans. Many Australian researchers have decided that travelling to the United States is no longer wise given the rise of fascism that could put their health and well-being at risk. The Society of Science Sociology has decided to turn its own conference into hybrid in-person and remote events. Guardianconsidering the threat Trump poses to personal freedom. According to the Guardian, people are being monitored for disability at the US border, with agents at the border checking for medications to see if they match a specific disability.
The way Trump and Elon Musk are currently destroying the US government is also becoming a calculation that foreign researchers are doing about their interactions with Americans. Countless research grants have been cancelled, making travel to the United States unnecessary for people who may risk traveling to the country. Even researchers with strong ties to the US have chosen to seek work from other countries. Reuters I report because work is simply exhausted.
There have also been reports that non-US people have decided to look elsewhere for holiday opportunities as the number of flights to the US from places like Europe and Canada. and Wall Street Journal I have a new report on Canadians selling villas in the US when they become “fearing what will happen.”
The United States is also trying to deport people with a white nationalist plan to expel dissenting countries. Several international students have now been invited to the masked secret police, including people like Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk, Pro-Palestine protesters, including Pro-Palestine protesters currently sitting in ice detention facilities. Ozturk’s only “crime” was writing operations for student newspapers opposed to Israeli war with Gaza. She picked up on the street near her home outside of Boston and flew to Louisiana. The Trump administration said it was preparing to lock up Ozturk and deport her for “anti-Semitism,” but supports Hamas, but the Washington Post reported on Sunday that a State Department investigation found what she had done. That’s not the case.
Trump appeared for a Press Availability El Salvador President Naive Bukere at the White House on Monday Continuous delivery People who have not committed crimes abroad in torture prisons in El Salvador. The US Supreme Court last week ruled that it would need to promote the return of Maryland’s Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who falsely accused the US government of being a member of the MS-13 gang, but the US president said he has no plans to reclaim Garcia.
Trump insists he can’t tell Bukere what to do by asking Garcia to return from Secott Prison in El Salvador, and Bukere was asked directly whether he would. Buquere falsely accused Garcia of being a “terrorist” and said he would not return the innocent man.
Collins: Can President Bukere consider this? Are you planning to return Garcia?
Bukele: How can you smuggle terrorists into the US? Of course, I’m not going to do that. The question is stupid

Trump also said Monday that he wanted to deport American citizens. El Salvadorhe claims he wants to actually build on Bukkere Five more prisons A place where the US can disappear more people.
Given the history of how fascist leaders often advance, the United States is in a very dangerous place as a country. American citizens disappeared to argue for issues that were previously considered speeches protected under the First Amendment to the US Constitution. And visitors to the US have even fewer rights than Americans.
Given the decline, it makes a lot of sense for those who have any choice in the matter to avoid travelling to the US. And with all the guardrails that held Trump down during his first period gone for so long, it would be a very difficult situation for days, weeks, months, years to come. Many people need to travel to the United States for work or family duties. But anyone who can help it should avoid the country for the near future. Things will be much worse before they get better.
