Jos Buttler has given him more sparkle than he has done.
Its strength, its hand and eye adjustments, their resilient wrists helped him support over 11,000 international runs and the best limited edition title of England’s history.
Eleven Odi hundreds, two test matches – formats he couldn’t crack at all – and one of the T20 Internationals will be added to 7 tons in the flashy Indian Premier League.
Only eight Virat Kohli had more IPL centuries than Buttler, and India’s greatness played more than 100 innings in its competition.
Buttler has served quite a bit recently — he will look to treatment when he features the Gujarat Titans in this year’s IPL and starts playing against the Punjab King on Tuesday. Live on Sky Sports Cricket Starting at 2pm.
Butler fires at IPL after Britain struggles?
He failed to beat the 40 in the February Dismal Champions Trophy campaign, as he only passed the 50 twice in the final 21 ODIs dating back to September 2023.
Butler’s IPL returns have been drained a bit since the Royals’ Golden 2022 season in Rajasthan. This came before he took over Eoin Morgan as British captain – he won 4 tons and 863 runs in many half-century.
In 2023, he made 392 runs in his 40s. In 2024 he won two burnt tons, but only passed 30 twice with nine other knocks.
Its reduced form was probably the reason Rajasthan released him after seven years of spells, but his reputation meant he was snapped to Gujarat for £1.4 million at the mega auction last November.
Titan crosses fingers that he purchased not only his past glory, but his future run. There is no guarantee that.
Butler turned 35 in September and fought the recent calf problem, so his age and injuries are creeping up alongside the player who was probably a thoroughbred in the best part of 15 years.
It will ultimately happen to them.
Butler was ready to open and keep for Gujarat
But the hope is that Butler’s decision to leave the England captain can give a boost to the latter stages of his career. He can now focus on what he can focus on doing his best – on scoring in a devastating style, for the club and country.
That may include batting England orders in one day’s international cricket, as he does in T20 format. Sky Sports Nasser Hussain feels he’s too low at No. 6 during the Champions Trophy as the team lost all the games.
Butler appears poised to open for Gujarat in the IPL, maintaining the wicket and forming a potentially formidable duo with Indian Shubmangill.
The Titans are aiming for a rebound from their 8th place finish last season after winning their debut campaign in 2022 – defeating Butler’s Rajasthan in the final and finishing as runner-up in 2023.
They also have a pretty tasty bowling attack. India’s Quick Mohammed Shiraj, Afghan leg spinner Rashid Khan and South African seafarer Kagisorabada are options.
There is also a Swiss Army Knife from Glen Phillips cricketer – whether batters, bowlers, extraordinary fielders or generate jaw-dropping catches.
But for English fans, the eyes become butterers. That was when the nation’s greatest white-ball batsman ever began playing again.
