Tucker Gleason ran for one score in overtime and threw for four more as Toledo defeated Pittsburgh 48-46 in a bowl-record six overtime innings in the Game Above Sports Bowl at Ford Field on Thursday. I broke it.
The game surpassed the previous record set 48 hours earlier, when South Florida defeated San Jose State 41-39 in five overtimes in the Hawaii Bowl on Tuesday.
Pitt freshman Julian Dugger, making his collegiate debut, scored two points in overtime and threw for two more, but an incomplete pass in the sixth overtime ended the game.
After Gleason and Dugger traded rushing touchdowns in the first overtime, both teams made field goals in the second overtime. Each threw a 2-point pass in the third overtime, and Gleason made another pass in the fourth overtime to make it 44-42.
Dugger was sacked and the game appeared to be over, but the Rockets were asked to hold off. Dagger was ruled short on a sneak attempt, and Toledo entered the field a second time, but replays determined he crossed the plane.
In the fifth overtime, Dugger made it 46-44 with a scoring pass to Gavin Bartholomew, but Gleason tied it with his fifth scoring pass of the game. Toledo was back in front in the sixth, and Dugger was forced to make a bad throw that ended the game.
The Panthers played without starting quarterback Eli Holstein (leg) and backup Nate Yarnell (transfer portal). Redshirt freshman walk-on David Lynch started the first game but was ejected in the third quarter after throwing two interceptions.
Dugger led the Panthers to two touchdowns and a field goal on their first three drives, turning a 20-12 deficit into a 30-20 lead.
But Darius Alexander returned Dugger’s interception 58 yards for a touchdown, giving Toledo its second pick-six of the game. The extra point made it 30-27 with 7:49 remaining, and the Rockets kicked the tying field goal with 1:45 remaining.
Toledo got off to a quick start, driving in a Gleason touchdown pass on the game’s opening drive, but Kyle Lewis blocked the extra point and returned it with Pitt’s first defensive two-point conversion since 1990. Ta.
Desmond Reed’s 3-yard run and Ben Soles’ 57-yard field goal gave Pittsburgh a 12-6 lead, but Gleason’s 67-yard touchdown pass to Junior Vanderos III put the Rockets at 13 midway through the second quarter. They led by -12.
On the next play from scrimmage, Braden Olds picked off Lynch’s pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown for a 20-12 halftime lead.
