Want to visit Mount Vernon Estate in George Washington?
On a recent road trip, I was visiting the DC area and decided to cross Mount Vernon from my bucket list.
I thought I could only spend around 4-5 hours here because I had a full schedule in DC, but if I try again, I plan to spend at least 6-8 hours here to do everything without feeling like I’m in a hurry.
Most of the actual mansions are now being renovated, but you can still pass through them and there is much more to visit the mansion style.

When I began planning my visit, the website had a lot to pour and build itinerary based on specific tour times and movie times during the time crunch.

The biggest thing really is to plan to spend most of your day here and then plan to schedule nothing immediately afterwards.

Virtual Mansion Tour
Once you enter Mount Vernon, the main building is located in the back with a theatre showing virtual apartment tours included in the entrance.
I recommend starting now. That way you just need to avoid going too far between the facilities (it’s pretty big), and introduce your visit.
Many of the mansions are currently under construction, so this is a great way to see areas that are not currently visible on tours.
If you are given a ticket of timing for this, it will run almost continuously, so you don’t have to wait too long to see it.
Detailed tour
After a virtual tour, you can go outside and explore the properties you want.
You have a map showing all the different spots you have to look at. Definitely keep this with you!

Washington War: Revolutionary War Film
Once you have explored the property and experienced all the interactive activities, you will begin to return to the entrance.
The film is only 22 minutes and conveniently starts every 30 minutes in an hour and 30 minutes, making it easy to schedule on your itinerary.
The film covers George Washington’s role in the Revolutionary War and the strategies he used to win the war.
I think it’s interesting and digestible for young people at 10-11.
museum
Before you finish visiting everything you need to do in Mount Vernon, the last thing you need to do is walk through the museum’s exhibits with artifacts from real estate and George Washington’s entire life.
It’s not a big exhibition, so you can spend up to an hour here, depending on how much you want to read about the various artifacts.
We personally skimmed it around 10-15 minutes after lunch was ready.
All the buildings in front are nearby, so if you have room before the next movie show begins, you can do the movies and museums in either order.

Dining at Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant
Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant is located at the main entrance to the property, so it makes sense to plan to dine here during your visit.
There are several dining rooms each uniquely decorated.
We had lunch here and shared a few different things.
I shared about the appetizers Peanut soup and Heecake.
We had peanut soup at a tavern in Williamsburg, but we definitely knew we would like to try it here as it was really just a menu from this part of the country.
Hoecake is essentially like cornbread made as pancakes.
I had it for my appetizer Butternut squash risotto.
Honestly, he was very rich and couldn’t eat it all at once.
It’s better to be shared as a side dish or with the table, but it’s still tasty.
JP loves Cajun food so he had it Jambalaya.
Most of the time, Cajun food is too spicy for me to enjoy, but this wasn’t the case.
It was all very good.
We really wanted to try some of the desserts, but we were way too full.

When planning your visit, the most important thing is to start with tour time for the detailed tour.

You don’t need to worry about tour times or compliments of the mansion at the Tomb Times, as your detailed tour covers both of them.
