Wentworth witnessed Rory McIlroy’s near-decisive victory at the BMW PGA Championship last weekend when he was denied victory by Billy Horschel.
Horschel holed out from afar with a stunning eagle putt to beat McIlroy in a thrilling playoff, just a week after Rory lost a closely fought match at the Irish Open to Rasmus Hojgaard.
On this week’s Sky Sports Golf Podcast Josh joins Rob Lee and Simon Holmes to discuss McIlroy’s runner-up finish and why Thriston Lawrence left with regrets.
“He was 20 under after four rounds and two others were tied, so I think everyone, including Thriston and Billy, will look back on this week and think they could have been one or two strokes better,” Lee said.
“In fact, Rory was very close to winning and you could even say he should have won the U.S. Open, the Irish Open and the PGA Championship.”
“He’s very close. I think he’s very good at ignoring the noise because there’s so much noise with Rory. When people come up to me in the supermarket to talk about Rory, I’ll 100% defend him.”
“Rory came close to winning three really big tournaments in three months but just couldn’t win. He lost to world class players!”
They also discuss the announcement that LIV golfers will be eligible to play for the United States in the Ryder Cup, as well as previews for the Presidents Cup and Spanish Open.
