Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis has been floated as a candidate to be Florida Atlantic’s next head coach, but sources told ESPN that talk of hiring Lewis is premature.
Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday that Lewis has been floated as a candidate for the starting head coaching job. However, other sources told ESPN that FAU has no plans to hire the former Baltimore Ravens linebacker.
The Owls are looking for a replacement for Tom Herman, who was fired on Monday after going 6-16 in two seasons and 0-6 in the American Athletic Conference this year. Former Georgia Southern coach Chad Lunsford is serving as FAU’s interim coach.
Lewis, 49, became one of the faces of the franchise during his 17-year career with the Ravens, winning two Super Bowls and being named first-team All-Pro seven times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
He retired after the 2012 season, but said he had been approached about coaching in the years since and was open to the idea.
Lewis’ name has come up in the wake of Deion Sanders’ success at the University of Colorado, with the Buffaloes aiming to win a Big 12 title and advance to the College Football Playoff.
Lewis had ties to Boca Raton, Fla., from his days as an All-American at Miami.
