Henderson, Nevada — The Las Vegas Raiders are releasing cornerback Jack Jones after trying to trade him, sources confirmed to ESPN on Sunday.
The Raiders save $3.4 million in salary cap space by moving out of Jones.
Jones played 24 games with the Raiders after the franchise claimed in 2023 that he left him out of exemption following a release from the New England Patriots.
In 2024, Jones began 16 games, totaling his career bests on tackles (69), defending his passes (16), and passing an interception (3). However, Jones gave up a passerby rating of 698 yards, nine touchdowns and 108.9 on 88 targets as the nearest defender.
After Jones and Nate Hobbs, who joined the Green Bay Packers on a four-year deal, the Raiders cornerback room will be in the 2024 fourth round pick Decamellion Richardson, MJ Devonshire, Cu Blue Kelly, Eric Stokes and Darnay Holmes.
Bennett, Stokes and Richardson play mostly outside, while Holmes is the team’s lonely nickel cornerback. At the annual league meeting, general manager John Spitek said teams must grasp the nickel spot.
“Nickel is an important place for Pete. [Carroll]’s and [defensive coordinator Patrick Graham’s] “Defense,” Spytek said. They are asked to do a lot and can be difficult to find. ”
Hope the Raiders use this month’s draft to improve their depth at cornerback. Las Vegas was able to target Michigan cornerback Will Johnson in the first round. Meanwhile, players like Maxwell Hairston (Kentucky) and Trey Amos (Ole Miss) could potentially be picks on the second day.
News that Jones has been released was first reported by the NFL Network.
