The man who police officers shot and killed Minnesota Senators and her husband in an attack that attacked them early Saturday at their home was injured in another shooting that the second lawmaker and his wife described as “targeted political violence.”
Police were looking for a gunman to take charge of attacks on Democrats. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said the book, found in a fake police vehicle recovered at one of the shooting ranges, recovered at one of the shooting ranges.
The two, familiar with the matter, have identified the suspect as being sought as a 57-year-old Vance Boerter. People were unable to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse were shot and killed at a Brooklyn Park home early Saturday. Second State Assemblyman Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times in Champlin. Officials say both Hortman and Hoffman were mentioned in the suspect’s writings.
“When we searched the vehicles, there was a manifesto identifying many lawmakers and other officials. We immediately issued a warning to the state. We took steps to warn them and provide security when necessary,” Bruly said.
State patrol Col. Christina Bogojevic asked people “from a wealth of caution” not to attend the “king” protests scheduled throughout the state on Saturday.
Bogojevic said there was no direct evidence that the protest would be targeted, but the suspects said he had a “no king” flyer in the car. Organizers announced that all protests across the state have been cancelled.
Hours after the shooting, hundreds of police and sheriff’s deputies from the area’s department were littered across the town with some of the tactical equipment equipped with attack-style weapons. Occasionally police obstacles when the car is stopped and checked.
Waltz said Hortmann and Hoffmann were deliberately targeted.
“We all have to stand up against all forms of political violence in Minnesota and across the country,” Waltz said at a press conference on Saturday. “The ones responsible for this are accountable.”
Hoffman, a Democrat, was first elected in 2012. He previously served as vice-chairman of the Anoka Henepin School Board, which manages Minnesota’s largest school district. Hoffman and his wife have one daughter. He represents the districts of northern Minneapolis.
At the time of her death, Hortman was the leader of the state legislature’s top Democratic party. She was also the former Speaker of the House. She was first elected in 2004. She and her husband had two children.
Drew Evans, director of the Criminal Arrest Bureau, said authorities were actively looking for suspects.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the extent of the injury, but Hortman and her spouse have died of gunshot wounds, Evans said. The “refuge shelter” order was effective early on Saturday.
Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson said the suspect is serving as a law enforcement officer.
“The suspect exploited the trust in our uniforms. What our uniforms are meant to express. That betrayal is deeply intrusive to us who wear badges with honor and responsibility,” he said.
Bruly said the suspect fled from behind the Hortmann home after a shootout with police.
The suspect was dressed like a police officer in uniform and “it looked like an SUV squad car. It had lights, emergency lighting, and it looked like a police car,” Bruly said.
President Donald Trump said in a White House statement that the FBI will take part in the investigation.
“Our Attorney General Pam Bondy and the FBI are investigating the situation and they will prosecute those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrifying violence is not tolerated in the United States.
Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demus, a Republican from Cold Spring, called the attack “evil,” and called it “beyond the words,” “beyond the words,” and “beyond the words” by the murder of Hortman and her husband Mark.
“With law enforcement responses ongoing and details still appearing, I would like to pray for all Minnesotans to lift up the victims of this horrifying attack and the law enforcement officials who are still working to arrest the perpetrators,” Demus said in a statement.
The shooting comes when political leaders across the country were attacked, harassed and blackmailed during an era of deep political divisions.
