Since Openai launched ChatGPT over two years ago, it has maintained its position as one of the forefronts of AI racing, constantly developing smarter models and spinoff products. The company is not going to slow down, and its ultimate goal is to achieve AI with artificial general information (AGI) or autonomous human-level intelligence.
“Our mission is to ensure that AGI benefits all humanity,” said Sam Altman, CEO of Openai. Blog post last month. “In a way, AGI is just another tool in this constant foothold of human progress that we are building together.”

But Microsoft, Openai’s biggest strategic partner, has taken a different approach. recently InterviewCEO Satya Nadella shared that she is not working on the long-term goal of achieving AGI because she believes that AGI is exaggerated. With years of partnership and Microsoft investing billions in Openai, it raises questions.
With the SXSW panel entitled “Reliable AI in Buildings: Evolving Safety Practices in Genai,” Responsible AI Sarah Bird’s Microsoft CPO sheds light on corporate dynamics. Despite her deviant approach, she shared that she was not “tension.”
“I think there’s a kind of tension between these two, but in reality it doesn’t seem to happen that way,” Byrd said.
Rather, Bird discovers that this ambitious goal will push Openai into “Dream Big” and instead of making progressive upgrades, developing new Net capabilities the world has never seen before. According to Bird, this drive and focus is needed for meaningful AI development.

Microsoft’s decision not to pursue AGI is rooted in the company’s desire to work with people to provide AI rather than completely swap out AI offerings. A major example is Microsoft’s secondary operations, positioned as an “AI companion” to help users of all major Microsoft products, including the Microsoft 365 suite application and the GitHub suite.
“For me, [AGI] It is non-goal and applies to Microsoft. We have a lot of people, but it’s pretty cool, so we have the skills to improve our human abilities and do things that humans aren’t good or that humans don’t want to do,” Bird said.
