The NFL is a league with a lot of turnover. Team rosters change every offseason, and free agency leads to reuse of talent.
Indeed, that has been the story of the New York Giants this past year. They let quality players like Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney go, but that decision ended up hurting the team in 2024. That got us thinking. Could a 53-man roster be made of former Giants alone?
Well, as it turns out, it was possible. In a sense.
The basic rules I set for this exercise are:
- All players/coaches must have been on the 90-man roster or practice squad at some point during the 2024 season (dating back to March 15, 2023), with one exception (below). did.
- Players who were not in the NFL in 2024 were considered if they played in another league (CFL, UFL, etc.) last season.
- A player/coach must have been on the Giants’ 90-man roster, 53-man roster, or practice squad for at least one day at some point in their career.
- The 53-man roster needed to be realistic and balanced in numbers at each position (i.e., you can’t have 1 RB and 10 WRs). Players also had to be listed by the position they played (i.e. you couldn’t put a TE along the OL, etc.).
This is what we came up with…
Quarterback (3)
- Geno Smith
- daniel jones
- cooper rush
Explanation: Having a mobile quarterback and a mobile No. 2 is exactly what this team needs. Based on roster composition, it will be a run-first/RPO offense. We considered Tyrod Taylor as a QB3, but ultimately chose Rush after his decent performance in 2024.
running back (4)
- Saquon Barkley
- matt breida
- Wayne Gallman
- Gary Brightwell
Explanation: Barkley is going to be the focal point of this offense (as we’ll see), and that’s not a bad thing. Breida will be a strong backup, Gallman will re-emerge in the UFL and Brightwell will be a quality special teams talent.
wide receiver (6)
- odell beckham jr.
- sterling shepherd
- Dante Pettis
- Kadarius Tony
- Caliph Raymond
- Colin Johnson
Explanation: This is not a very good group of receivers. Shepard was heading into retirement, OBJ couldn’t shake off his injuries, and Tony had his worst performance ever. Pettis continues to play his role well, Johnson presents a big target, and Raymond is a top-level return specialist who can also play a limited offensive role.
tight end (3)
- Evan Engram
- cody latimer
- chris myalik
Explanation: Engram fills in some of the talent he lacks at wide receiver. Latimer, on the other hand, has become a star tight end in the UFL and can also convert to wide receiver on the outside. Myalik can be used as a tight end, fullback, or H-back.
Offensive line (10)
- LT Matt Part
- LG Ben Bredeson
- C John Feliciano
- RG Kevin Zeitler
- RT Cam Fleming
- OT Eric Smith
- OT Roy Mbaeteka
- OL Will Hernandez
- OL Mark Glowinski
- OL Nick Gates
Explanation: The interior of this line is solid and the iOL depth is a bonus. Gates brings much-needed energy and tenacity and can start at three positions if needed. The obvious problem is the tackle position, which is severely lacking.
Defense line (6)
- leonard williams
- Ashawn Robinson
- BJ Hill
- dalvin tomlinson
- Jonathan Hankins
- Ryder Anderson
Explanation: This is a very deep and talented group. Williams is at or near the top of his game, Robinson remains a quality player, and the rest of the players still bring legitimate value. The choice to include Anderson was due to his potential versatility, which can be understood by looking at the following slides.
Edge/Linebacker (8)
- lorenzo carter
- holy war zone
- KJ Cloyd
- cam brown
- Nico Laros
- Oshain Siminez
- benton whitley
- Ellerson Smith
Explanation: This is probably the weakest unit in the entire team. There’s nothing here that inspires confidence, and concerns about the lack of pass rush would be very real.
Cornerback (6)
- james bradbury
- Isaac Yiadom
- nick mcleod
- Fabien Moreau
- antonio hamilton
- Amani Oruwariye
Explanation: This group is also not very exciting. Bradberry is two seasons removed from being an All-Pro, while the rest are below mid-major at this point in their respective careers. I could have added Eli Apple…pass.
Safety (4)
- Xavier McKinney
- julian love
- Jabrill Peppers
- bobby mccain
Explanation: McKinney has the potential to be Defensive Player of the Year, and Love and Peppers continue to play at a high level and provide needed leadership.
special teams (3)
- LS Taber Pepper
- K Chris Boswell
- P Riley Dixon
Explanation: This is truly a trio of powerful special teamers. The aforementioned Kalife Raymond will serve as the return specialist.
coaching staff
- head coach: Dan Campbell
- offensive coordinator:Sean Payton
- defense coordinator: Steve Spagnuolo
- special teams coordinator:Chase Blackburn
Explanation: They could bring in Davis Webb as quarterbacks coach.
