The National Women’s Soccer League has officially added two names to its record book.
Angel City’s Gisele Thompson, with the help of her sister Alyssa, scored her first professional goal at Audi Field in Washington on Friday night, sending a cross from the left to Gisele, who spotted behind the net. With goals, the pair became the first sisters in NWSL history to achieve their goals.
The goal came in the 22nd minute, giving Angel City a 2-0 lead in what became the final 4-3 victory over the Washington Spirit. Gisele also explained the assist in the 72nd minute of Katie Zelem, who led ACFC 3-2 before Riley Tiernan’s game winner in the 98th minute.
“We are very pleased that we have won and sister-to-sister goals.” Gisele said after the game. “We’ve always dreamed about this, especially at this height. [level] Soccer.
“It was amazing to do it together and it was incredible to get my first goal.”
This was the moment when the two had become apparent since they signed an extension with Angel City in January. Alyssa, 20, who was the youngest player on the US national team’s 2023 Women’s World Cup team, agreed to a three-year extension to keep her with the team until 2028.
Alyssa was her first overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft at 18 at Harvard Westlake High School in Los Angeles. Alyssa, from Los Angeles, next played for MLS’s under 17 Footbolu Academy Boys Team, scoring in her Angel City debut.
Gisele went to Angel City last year, following her sister. She also developed with Total Futbol Academy before signing a professional contract just three days before her 17th birthday. The sisters were the first high school athletes to win a contract with Nike for their name, image and portrait.
After playing in the World Cup, Alyssa was removed from the small US roster due to last year’s Parisilympics. She returned to the national team last fall and scored her first goal in a 3-1 victory over Iceland in Texas. She played 13 games with the national team.
Before Friday, the NWSL had no sister-to-sister goals. Samantha and Kristie Mewis played in the NWSL, but were not on the same team. Both Tori and Maddie Haster played temporarily for the spirit in 2018, but were not combined for the goal.
Plus, this marks the second biggest achievement for the Thompson sisters this year. In February, the duo became the second pair of sisters Starting the US Women’s National Team Game Together, we will be joining Mewis Sisters, who appeared side by side in three USWNT games in their careers.
