According to the arrest warrant, former NFL player Antonio Brown is facing charges of attempted murder resulting from a shooting that took place during an altercation outside an amateur boxing event in Miami.
Brown, 36, has been accused by security staff of grabbing a handgun and firing two shots at a man who had previously entered into a boxing fight.
Victim Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu told investigators that one of the bullets had grazing his head.
The warrant does not list the lawyers for Brown, an all-pro wide receiver who last played in the NFL for Tampa Bay in 2021 but spent most of his 12-year career in Pittsburgh.
The second-degree attempted murder charge will result in a maximum of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
This is the latest issue in a series of legal issues for Brown, who has been criticized for previously moving truck drivers, several domestic violence claims, failed child support payments and other cases.
During his 2021 game against Tampa Bay with the New York Jets, Brown drove off the field with his jersey, shoulder pads and gloves, leading to a release by the Buccaneers.
After that incident, Bucs quarterback Tom Brady said people should show some degree of compassion to Brown, who lived in Brady’s house while in Tampa Bay.
“It’s a difficult situation,” Brady said. “Everyone has to do what he can to help him in the way he really needs it. We all love him, and we care deeply about him.
According to the arrest warrant, Brown attended a celebrity boxing event held in Miami on May 16th.
Police were called to the location after other patrons reported that the hearing gun was fired. Some of them said Brown was the shooter, but when he was taken into custody in the parking lot, no weapon was found, but two bullet casings were found.
Brown was released after the victim was not immediately found, according to the warrant. Investigators then learn that Nantumbu is the victim.
Based on surveillance video, the arguments outside the boxing event involving Brown, Nantumbu and others were split by security staff.
“It appears Brown is recovering the black firearm from the security officer’s right hip joint,” the warrant said:
Nantumbu identified Brown as the shooter and informed investigators that he had known Brown since 2022.
In a social media post after the argument, Brown said, “I jumped at multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewels and cause physical harm to me.”
Brown was selected in the first team’s All-Pro four times, making seven Pro Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2010-18, and was traded with the Oakland Raiders at the time.
However, he didn’t end his career there after 15 games with the New England Patriots (2019) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2020-21).
Brown caught 928 passes and 83 touchdowns for 12,291 yards in 146 games. He led the league with two catches, received two yards and received one touchdown reception.
