The WNBA announced that Becky Hammon has been named Coach of the Year for the 2022 season.

Hammon led the Aces to a 26-10 record, tied for the league’s best record with the Chicago Sky. The Aces also won the 2022 Commissioner’s Cup by defeating the Sky 93-83 in July. Las Vegas won the tiebreaker against the Sky and clinched the No. 1 seed. Hammon is the first former player to win the award on the sideline in his debut season, and the third former player to win the COTY award overall.

The Ace coach worked on the sidelines as an assistant coach on Gregg Popovich’s coaching staff with the Spurs from 2014 to 2022, becoming the second female NBA coach in history. While on the Spurs’ coaching staff in 2015, she became the first female head coach of a Summer League team. That same season, the Spurs won the Las Vegas Summer League title. She also became the first woman to serve on the All-Star coaching staff.

Hammon decided to sign as the Aces’ head coach and first million-dollar coach after an offseason filled with interviews for high-profile NBA head coaching and GM jobs. She received advance offers and phone calls from the WNBA, including one from Liberty, where she was close to signing.
The Aces return to action on Sunday for Game 1 of their series against the Seattle Storm. The semifinal series will feature a record seven former No. 1 overall picks facing off between the Aces and Storm.
