Trump to name immigration hardliner Stephen Miller deputy chief of staff : NPR

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to nominate Stephen Miller as deputy chief of staff for policy at the White House.

The role brings Mr. Miller back to the White House, where he is expected to take a lead role in crafting and implementing President Trump’s immigration policies, including plans for the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.

“This is another great choice by the President,” Vice President-elect J.D. Vance wrote on X, apparently confirming reports of Miller’s appointment.

Miller is one of President Trump’s longest-serving and most trusted advisers. He worked with Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and later joined the White House as a senior adviser.

He is best known for his role as the lead author of some of the most powerful immigration plans of the first Trump administration, including the highly controversial zero-tolerance policy that led to the separation of children from their parents.

After President Trump left office, Miller founded America First Legal, a nonprofit organization that serves as a conservative version of the ACLU. Working with conservative lawyers, he has filed hundreds of lawsuits and legal claims against Democrats on behalf of conservative causes.

Miller is likely to be one of the most controversial figures in the new Trump administration. However, the aide position is not a cabinet position and does not require Senate confirmation.

In the final stages of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, Miller again played a warm-up role at several rallies.

“You can take back your country, you can take back your future, you can take back your state,” Miller said at one of President Trump’s final rallies in Salem, Virginia.

“We can look our children in the eyes and say, ‘We did it, we saved America, we saved this republic.’ We didn’t allow that to be stolen from us.”
