Threads appears to be rolling out a new location tagging feature that allows users to add locations to their posts. Some users have reported seeing changes to the Threads app, but it doesn’t seem to be available to everyone yet.
This feature is similar to Instagram’s location tags. If you give threads access to your location, you’ll see a list of nearby places to tag, but you can also search for places manually. For example, I’ve already seen some users jokingly tag their posts with “hell.”
According to Meta’s in-app disclaimer, the company plans to use location sharing to better customize threads by showing “personalized content” about nearby places. This change could help improve Threads’ search capabilities, which are still often lacking, and make the app a little more useful when tracking breaking news and other timely events.
This change could also help in the future when Meta eventually switches on ads in threads. Mark Zuckerberg said the company plans to continue expanding the service before introducing ads to its platform, but that getting user consent to share location information would provide critical information to the company’s advertising machine. He said it would be.
Meta did not immediately respond to questions about the feature, but it appears the company is still rolling out the feature. Location sharing appeared in the Threads app, but disappeared after about an hour. It still doesn’t seem to show up at all in the web version of Threads.
