Netflix Games has created a panel about the inspiration behind Netflix’s Big-Effort Games and the shows they are based on.
Jason Altman, head of Netflix’s TransMedia, led the panel at the Game Developers Conference in a side event for Netflix Games.
Bill Jackson of Netflix Games said Squid Game Unleashed was a big opportunity, but added, “We knew we had to get it right.” He said the show was very dark and the game team decided that they had to diversify and lighten it up.
“The result is that it’s a very different entry point to the world and a different representation of fandom,” Jackson said.
He said the company will promote world expression with Squid Games and come up with something different. Having a serious show cartoon-style game with lots of killings was a very different twist and a bit dangerous move.
He said. The game sensed which parts of the streaming series you watched on Netflix and rewarded them based on their progress.
Albert Kim said his game in electric state was a companion to Netflix’s hit film Electric State. Jason said the game has a retro vibe and allows you to explore the siblings of the show.
“It was emotionally driven in terms of the meta-layered playing the game with Michelle and Chris,” Kim said.
He wants fans who are jumping into the world to truly feel the whole thing. Charlie Booker, creator of Black Mirror, said the game is different because the players are so different. On Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, he said the players were “annihibiters” of the Bandersnatch show. It gave player agency.
Kim said it would be interesting that the game would have an impact on the Netflix show. Altman said Netflix wants to explore the boundaries of TransMedia and the types of games that can be run in a unique way on Netflix. There may be more watch features that the game responds to the player.
“Netflix is a place for experiments where you can explore boundaries,” says Altman. “Players want to experience the world they love in new ways.”
