According to a letter obtained by Politico, President Randi Weingarten, a longtime power member of the Democratic National Committee, has left the DNC.
Weingarten, a member of the DNC, wrote to DNC Chairman Ken Martin that he has been a member of the DNC for 23 years and has fundamentally disagreeed with him.
“I look a little off the leadership you’re forging,” the union leader said in a letter dated June 5th.
Weingarten’s departure is the latest indication that the party is still caught up in factional conflict, which could intensify pointing and criticism among Democrats. Weingarten defended former DNC vice-chairman David Hogg. He was banished from the committee post last week.
Weingarten also supported another candidate, who will lead DNC Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler in the party election earlier this year. When Martin took over, he removed Weingarten from her position on the influential DNC rules and bylaws committee that he had been sitting since 2009.
A Weingarten spokesman said when he told AFT members the news of her departure, “Randi is proud” and “I’m proud.”
Martin was criticized by some Democrats after he told DNC officials and staff in a recent personal conversation that Hogg “essentially destroyed the opportunity to show the leadership I need” and “I don’t know if I want to do this anymore.” However, many other Democrats, including DNC officials, were standing by Martin’s side and bashed Hogg as being divisive.
The civil war among Democrats comes as they are trying to rebuild their party after their defeat in 2024.
Martin did not respond to requests for comment.
