Several veterans who finished the 2024 season on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad officially became free agents today after their P-Team contracts officially expired. According to the league, the contracts of WR/RET Jamal Agnew, NT Brayden Fehoko, DB Jyon Gilbert, OL John Legault, WR Scotty Miller, S Eric Rowe, TE Matt Sokol, and RB Jonathan Ward will end today. It became.
Ward re-signed a reserve/futures contract with the team, which will likely be reflected on tomorrow’s trade sheet.
Agnew signed as a depth receiver/returner later this year. With six career total punt and kick return scores, he was an interesting name and was elevated to the active/inactive roster for the team’s playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens. That was a sign that he would suit up and play a role in the wild card game, but Pittsburgh instead opted to inactivate him. He officially did not appear in a 2024 regular season game.
Fehoko specializes in run-stopping nose tackles, but he hasn’t played in a regular season game in the past two years. He injured his shoulder during training camp and was released before rejoining the team in late October. He played in 19 games with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2020-2022.
Gilbert was the first young cornerback signed by the Steelers during training camp. He appeared in three games with the New York Giants in 2022 and ended the season on Pittsburgh’s practice/team injured reserve due to an unspecified injury.
Legault returned to Pittsburgh for another stint after playing with the team the past two times, including starting five games in 2021. He was signed to the practice squad just before Week 1, but did not appear in any regular season games this season. Known for his work ethic and versatility, he appeared in one game with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 after spending time with the Tennessee Titans.
Miller spent the entire regular season on the Steelers’ 53-man roster. He played sparingly, catching just five passes. His most notable contribution came in the regular season opener, when he served as an emergency gunner and holder in an 18-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, making one tackle and converting Chris Boswell’s field goal late in the game. I let it happen. Pittsburgh released Miller before the playoff game, but re-signed him to the practice squad and promoted him to the wild card game. Like Agnew, he also had no clothes on.
Lowe signed later this year and returned for a second stint with the Steelers. Lowe, a key piece of the 2023 defense who started the team’s final four games, was neither signed nor promoted to the team’s 53-man roster after re-signing with Pittsburgh in mid-November. He turns 33 later this year, and his NFL career may be coming to an end.
Sokol was signed midway through training camp after tight end Rodney Williams suffered a shoulder injury. He spent the season on the practice squad and did not appear in any games. Sokol has played in eight NFL games with the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots, but has yet to catch a pass.
It’s still possible that Pittsburgh could add any of these players to its roster in the offseason, but it remains to be seen if any of them will return.
