For a miserable person like me, routine is extremely important.
I am easily distracted and influenced by my environment. People around meWhen you have a predictable routine, you’re more likely to get things done while remaining human.
Unfortunately, many things get forgotten when traveling.
Then last week, I was traveling and found myself falling behind on my geek duties.
I had to catch up. House of the Dragon (Season 2 is a big step up!) I also missed some of my favorite nerdy podcasts.
As I worked out, I thought about how I could catch up. I know that working out makes me feel like a better person.
And then I remembered a habit-forming technique I learned many years ago.
I googled the technique before I started writing about it… but then I realized I had already written about it. Well done, past Steve!
(I suppose that’s to be expected after publishing over 1000 articles in 15 years.)
This technique is called “Temptation Bundling.”
That’s when you combine the two activities. need Related to you want Things to do.
For example: Listen to your favorite audiobooks or podcasts only when you’re at the gym or tracking your steps.
As I pointed out in my updated post Article about Temptation BundleProfessor Katie Milkman conducted an experiment to test whether listening to audiobooks only at the gym would affect people’s behavior.
Study participants attended the gym 51% more often than those who were told they could listen to addictive audiobooks only while working out.
Exercise My constants During my trip, I followed my own advice:
I told myself I was just watching. House of the Dragon While walking.
Plus, as I spend more time at the gym, I’m able to listen to more podcasts.
Sure enough, in order to watch a podcast episode to the end, I found myself skipping rope for a few extra minutes, spending an extra day at the gym doing range of motion exercises, or walking an extra mile on the treadmill.
More “nerd” + more “fitness” = win!
