Aaron Rodgers officially signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier today, and the team announced that they will soon be wearing the No. 8 jersey. P Corliss Waitman has already finished 8th in Pittsburgh, but he will change to 3rd According to Adam Schefter of ESPN on x.
Usually, players like Rogers who request a number will need to pay in the name of another player or make a charitable donation. Rogers checks if Weightman did anything to wrestling No. 8 from him. Though that number isn’t special for a weightman, as he wears three different numbers in his career.
Waitman intervened with the Steelers last season when Cameron Johnston collapsed in Week 1 with a season-ending knee injury. Waitman previously spent time with the Steelers in 2021, but did a spectacular job for them in 2024.
Johnston told the media he is 100% back this season and is healthy. According to Steelers Beat Writer Mark Kaboly from Pat McAfee Show, he “environs hell from hell” in OTAS. Waitman probably sees the appearance on the deal Johnston signed in his last offseason, but they will hold a competition at training camp this summer.
Before the waitman, the number 3 jersey was worn by QB Russell Wilson and P Bloodwing before him last season. This number has not been published many times in the history of the franchise. Along with Wilson, K Jeffreyd is the most notable former Steelers who wear this number.
In 2024, Weightman averaged 41.4 yards per punt, with 27 punts falling within the 20-yard line. His raw yards per punt were 46.4. This was a slight improvement over Presley Harvin III over the past few years, but it was still in a third of the entire league. If he wins the competition, Johnston could potentially post a franchise record on all major punting statistics. He looked phenomenal in the preseason before his injury.
