Oscar Piastri has signed an extension of his contract with McLaren, which will keep him on the team until at least 2028.
Piastri signed the previous year and began racing McLaren in 2023, agreeing to a new annual contract in addition to the current contract that will run until 2026.
Announcements announced before the Grand Prix of the season opening game this weekend I live in Sky SportsPiastri and Randnoris will be McLaren’s teammates for the next three seasons as Norris’ contract expires at the end of 2027.
“It’s a great feeling to know that I’m part of McLaren’s long-term vision. When I signed in 2022, the team had a belief in me. The journey I’ve taken over the past two seasons to help bring McLaren back to the top of the sport is incredible,” Piastri said.
“There have been so many talented and special people at MTC who have helped me become the winner of Formula 1 races very early in my career, so I am extremely proud to be representing this legendary team for many years.
“I’m excited to compete for the big award as a McLaren driver. After some great achievements last year, I’ve even starved to stay at a sharp end.”
Piastri has won two races in his F1 career, the Grands Prix in Hungary and Azerbaijan last year, and is one of his favorites for the title of the season, with McLaren expected to have a strong car.
McLaren is the incumbent constructor champion and CEO Zach Brown says his team has the best driver pairings on the grid.
“It’s great to see Oscar’s extension with McLaren. He’s not only an incredibly talented driver, but his work ethic and cultural fit within the team made it easier to extend his time with Papaya,” Brown said.
“We have the best driver lineup on the grid. Over the past two seasons we’ve seen how much of the assets are for the Oscar team and are on track.
“He was absolutely basic in addition to our legacy at the 2024 Constructors Championship last season, so we continue to fight together for the World Championships, so we look forward to what we can do in the future.”
Will Piastri and Norris continue to work at once?
Norris and Piastri appear to have a good relationship in the two seasons they spent together as teammates, but last year there were moments of tension.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Norris was repeatedly told to pass Piastri in the later stages of the race after weakening his teammates at the pit stop. Eventually, Norris passed the Piastri three laps, winning the Maiden F1 race for the Australian.
Six weeks later, at Monza, Piastri overtook Norris on the opening lap of the pair’s first and second Italian Grand Prix. In doing so, Norris lost to Charles Leclerc and the Ferrari driver was won.
After that incident, McLaren declared Norris would be prioritized for the rest of the season due to his position in the driver’s championship. However, at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Norris slowed down Sergio Perez for the latter to win the race.
“To further expand our partnership with Oscar is a symbol of our belief and trust in him as a driver, reflecting our shared ambition to continue our championship fight together,” said Team Principal Andrea Stella.
“It has been a joy to work with Oscar throughout the last two seasons and continues to prove how impressive he is, from a driver’s talent, determination, work ethic, and his contribution to the team and culture as a person.
“Along with Rand, we have what we need in the long term to continue moving forward. We look forward to knowing that Oscar will continue to grow and grow as a driver and that many of the successes are ahead of him.”
