The New York Giants have around $43 million in cap space available to play in Cam Free Agency next month, but that doesn’t mean they won’t continue tweaking the roster.
One potential hat casualty this offseason is veteran kicker Graham Gano. Athletics.
The Giants don’t have an Albatross contract to reduce this offseason. They are in a healthy cap situation where there is no need to cut the cap. Still, for Gano, the 37-year-old who missed 16 games due to injuries over the past two seasons, the $5.7 million cap hit is an overkill. The giant can create a $3.2 million cap savings while eating $2.5 million in dead money by throwing away Gano. It’s not an overwhelming financial impulse, but teams in the Giants’ position can better allocate that money.
The Giants could get another way with Gano as outlined by Dan Duggan, and may already have his successor to Jude McAtamney, who signed a deal with futures last month. Not there.
McAtamney, a native of Ireland who kicked Rutgers, played in one game for the Giants last season, transforming a 31-yard field goal to Washington in the Giants’ Week 9 loss.
The Giants can also explore cheaper veteran options. Greg Joseph was the kicker in his final six games last season. He was able to come back this summer to challenge McAtamuney at camp.
