NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Minnesota Vikings are moving forward with their first round pick QB JJ McCarthy in 2024 and are not going to pursue Aaron Rodgers, but profile football talk Mike Florio believes Minnesota is still his destination. 93.7 Appears on The Fan’s PM TeamFlorio said the Vikings could choose to sign Rogers after seeing what McCarthy looks like in the offseason program.
“I haven’t ruled out Minnesota at some point yet… The final analysis is that the Vikings gave the word “what they see” [J.J.] McCarthy can do it in the offseason program and they haven’t ruled out Rogers at some point,” Florio said.
Florio said he knows that Rogers will not sign with the Viking anytime soon, but he said he doesn’t think Rogers will sign anywhere soon.
“The only thing we know is that he won’t be in the Vikings in the short term. I don’t think there’s a short term answer… he’s hurrying, hurrying, taking his time.”
If Rogers is ready to go to the Vikings, if McCarthy is struggling while Minnesota is mini-camping with Otas, he can continue to play the standby game, hoping Minnesota will look for a veteran option. He was out of knee surgery and if the Vikings felt he needed another year of development, they could tentatively choose Aaron Rodgers while McCarthy sat down.
Currently, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants look like two options for Rogers, but as Florio said, he wasn’t making a decision in a hurry, so he might be waiting for the reported option. At this point, the Steelers seem to be committed to Rogers’ pursuit, and will likely wait for him, even if it means losing other options like Russell Wilson.
The Steelers can enter the season with Mason Rudolph as a starter if necessary, but Rogers is his preferred choice. If Pittsburgh had waited months for Rogers to make up for him, it would have been a blow for him to sign with Minnesota.
Resignation also appears to be Aaron Rodgers’ option, and the Steelers could be left empty-handed, even if Rodgers hasn’t signed with the Giants. It’s a game that’s likely they knew they’d come in when they negotiated with Rogers, but it really shows the lack of plans the Steelers had at quarterback after Justin Fields decided to test the free agent market.
