Los Angeles’ genre-focused Beyond Fest announced its program today, and among the fantastic premieres and revivals tucked away was a title that’s been stuck in our minds lately thanks to Mike Flanagan: the 2008 Australian horror mockumentary. Lake Mungo. that I can’t A few days after the horror film director revealed his name Lake Mungo Beyond Fest called the film “chilling” and announced that the 4K restoration will get a special introduction when it makes its international premiere at the festival, and we’re OK with that. Lake Mungo Fully deserving of its newfound appreciation.
It’s a strange choice for a 4K restoration. If you’ve seen Joel Anderson’s film – the eerie tale of a family struggling to come to terms with the death of their beloved teenage daughter – you know that its mystery is very much intertwined with the grainy capabilities of the technology of the time, particularly cell phone cameras, in the mid-2000s. The film is also an exploration of spirit photography and how images are interpreted by people desperate to find meaning in them. But perhaps the 4K treatment has made it even more difficult to understand. Lake Mungo‘s intentionally vague found-footage scenes will make it a little less creepy, and it might also make people less likely to rewind the inevitable home version to take a second look at what they saw. think They might just have seen it.
Flanagan will also be at Beyond Fest where he’ll premiere his 2016 cult slasher film “Shush Cut.” Quietlystarring and co-written by his frequent collaborator and partner Kate Siegel, is a special black and white version with a new audio mix that will be included on the film’s upcoming Blu-ray/UHD Collector’s Edition.
