Defending champion Mexico overcame a slow start to beat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Saturday night in a Conca Caff Gold Cup group stage match.
West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez began scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raul Zimenez added the goal to the 47th, and defender Cesar Montez got another on the 53rd.
Jiménez currently scores 40 goals with the Mexican National team, six times away from Jared Borgetti and is second on El Tri’s career scoring list. Javier Hernandez is a Mexican scorer of 52.
Mexico leads Group A by three points, with the Dominican Republic at the bottom. Other countries in the group, Costa Rica and Suriname, will face off on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
Peter Gonzalez in the 51st minute and Edison Ascona in the 67th scored for the Dominicans.
The match took place at Sofi Stadium in front of 54,309 fans, most of which cheered Mexico.
There was uncertainty about how many Mexican fans would be in the game. On Friday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged US officials not to target individuals involved in the game.
Dozens of workers are being detained by federal immigration authorities in a series of attacks in the LA Fashion District and Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. More than 100 people are in custody.
Mexico will be looking to compete in the next round next Wednesday, playing Suriname while the Dominican Republic plays Costa Rica. Both games will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
