The New York Jets’ disappointing season continues to take a turn for the worse.
Running back Breece Hall is out, cornerback Source Gardner is not expected to play in Sunday’s game, and five-time Pro Bowl linebacker CJ Mosley was placed on injured reserve on Friday, ending his season. Ta. For Mosley, 32, who suffers from a herniated disc in his neck, it likely marks the end of his career with the Jets.
The Jets (3-9) prepared to face the Miami Dolphins (5-7) at Hard Rock Stadium without two of their best players, Hall (knee) and Gardner (hamstring). . Both were listed as questionable in the game. If the Jets lose, they will be eliminated from championship contention and their playoff berth will be extended to 14 seasons, the longest in the NFL.
“They’re doubtful unless something magical happens in the next few days,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Friday.
Gardner tore his hamstring last week. In the same game, Hall aggravated a knee injury he sustained two weeks earlier. He had hyperextension and MCL issues in his surgically repaired left knee, the same knee he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in 2022.
Rookies Braeron Allen and Isiah Davis will replace Hall, as will Kane Wang-Wu, who scored on a 99-yard kickoff return in his Jets debut last week. Brandin Echols is expected to start in Gardner’s place against Miami’s speedy receiving corps.
Mosley’s decision wasn’t a surprise, but it came as a huge shock considering what he means to the team. He is a captain and is considered by his teammates to be a central figure in the defense.
“It was a very proud and difficult decision by a great player and leader,” Ulbrich said. [he’s] All of those things are for us. It was not an easy decision for him, but it was the best decision for him and our organization. ”
The injury occurred on October 27, before a road game against the New England Patriots. Mosley said he felt a “burn” on the back of his neck during warm-ups and his neck “frozen up.” He was absent from the match. Mosley, who was told he would not need surgery, attempted to return despite the loss of the Jets’ season.
Mosley said he’s been doing well, but suffered a small setback in Thanksgiving practice when he collided with Allen during a short-yardage play. Undaunted, he tried again this week, practicing fully on Wednesday in hopes of playing against the Dolphins. There was clearly a setback as he missed Thursday’s practice.
His soccer future has become bleak due to the injury.
Mosley is under contract through 2025, but has a hefty cap hit of $12.8 million, which includes $4.25 million in guaranteed money. He has played in just four games this season, losing the starting spot to Jamian Sherwood during a four-game absence due to a toe injury. With the new regime in place, Mosley will likely become a cap casualty.
To replace him on the roster, the Jets plan to activate wide receiver Allen Lazard from IR.
