On April 4th, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives appeared on CNBC to discuss the potential impacts of current tariffs and compare the situation with economic Armageddon. If the current tariffs are in place, Ives believes it will lead to a total reduction in demand of 15% to 20%. He believes investors are much more worried given the early crash of Covid-19 events in March 2020. Analysts believe investors should focus on negotiations, impact on consumer-centric companies, and the possibility of tariff adjustments from comments on possible demand disruption. He even believes that businesses may refuse to provide guidance for first quarter revenue calls due to sustained tariff uncertainty.
Ives believes that many tech companies cannot absorb the high tariff rise, and rather this cost will be carried over to consumers, leading to significant margin erosion and potentially reduced sales. He showed that tech stocks are currently being cut to numbers at pricing between 10% and 15%. He suggests that investors should consider companies with long-term potential as they believe revenues could normalize in 2025 and 2026. Analysts are also working on defensive performance for defense contractors. While acknowledging the relative stability here, Ives warned that even these sectors are not immunized by tariffs. He focused on important foreign elements, particularly in hardware and other sectors, from 40% to 50%.
