Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarap Ranmohan Naidu on Sunday said a new terminal building will be constructed within three years to increase passenger capacity and facilities at Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport.
Naidu inaugurated a new tower-cum-technical block for air traffic control and garbage disposal facilities at the city airport.
While mentioning the function, Naidu said the Ministry of Civil Aviation is working on plans for a new terminal building at the airport, which is expected to be constructed by the end of 2028.
“Currently, 4 million people per year can use Indore airport, but due to the increase in civil aviation activities, that is not enough. Therefore, I would like to remind the people of Indore that the airport has the capacity to accommodate 55 million passengers. “I guarantee you it’s been four months,” he said.
The minister said changes would be made to the existing airport building to increase passenger capacity.
The ministry is also considering extending the length of the runway.
“The airport runway is currently 2,800 meters long, but we would like to extend it to 3,400 meters so that even large aircraft with Code E can land there. “We have requested that it be adjacent to the airport as soon as possible,” he said.
Naidu said around 90 aircraft operate from Indore airport every day. The city has air connections to 21 other cities in the country and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.
He said in response to people’s demands, talks will be held with airlines connecting Indore with Singapore, Bangkok and Dubai.
At the ceremony, local MP Shankar Lalwani demanded that Indore airport be given international airport status. He stressed that despite having been operating international flights for five years, the facility has not been granted international airport status.
