How to watch Tuesday’s vice presidential debate between Vance and Walz : NPR

Vice presidential candidates, Ohio State Senator J.D. Vance (Republican) and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (Democratic), confront In Tuesday’s debate for the 2024 election cycle.

This will be the only time both candidates will meet on stage and simultaneously present their policy positions to a broader American audience, one that may be less familiar than the presidential candidate’s partner.

Both men have similar roles in their respective campaigns, appealing to working-class voters in the “blue wall” states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin this fall.

The debate will be hosted by CBS News in New York City starting at 9pm ET.

Who is your running mate?

Walz served in the National Guard for 20 years, re-enlisting after the Sept. 11 attacks, but was only deployed to Italy in 2003 during the war. Vance, who served in the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq for six months, also did not participate in combat.

What are the rules for discussion?

The debate lasted 90 minutes, and both sides agreed on a set of rules.

There were no attendees, and each candidate stood behind the podium. Candidates will have two minutes to make their final statements. Mr. Vance won the virtual coin toss on September 26th and was named second in the final statement.

Vance and Waltz will not be allowed to have any pre-written notes or props, and no topics or questions will be shared with the campaign in advance. Unlike presidential debates, the microphones will remain on, but CBS News reserves the right to turn them off.

Each candidate will have two minutes to respond to each question, and the other candidate will have two minutes to respond, according to CBS News. Each candidate will then have one minute to make further rebuttals. At the moderator’s discretion, candidates may be given an additional minute each to continue the discussion.

What comes next?

This is likely to be the last debate before voting day. Some states have already begun shipping mail-in ballots.

Harris challenged Trump to another debate on October 23, but Trump refused, saying it was “too late.”

Election day is November 5th.
