On Thursday, Oct. 3, the league announced it had awarded the 22-year-old Indiana Fever phenom its highest honor as a rookie. There was a fever after the news broke. I posted a video via X It shows the moment Clark first heard about her accomplishment a few days ago.
The clip shows the point guard practicing ahead of a Sept. 25 game against the Connecticut Sun. (The Suns defeated the Fever 87-81, eliminating the Fever from the playoffs.) While Clark was on the court with his teammates, the league commissioner Cathy Engelbart I called them personally to tell them the good news in advance.
“Caitlin, it seems like just yesterday I called your name on stage as the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft,” Engelbert told Clark. “As you held on to your Indiana Fever jersey for the first time, it was a record-breaking season full of great performances for you and the entire team. I know the hard work and dedication from all of you. And it paid off in the playoffs.”
Clark smiled and seemed a little nervous as he listened to Englebert’s introduction. Her face was filled with suppressed emotion.
“I know the best is yet to come,” Engelbert continued. “So, congratulations, Kaitlyn. You are the 2024 KIA WNBA Rookie of the Year!”
Clark then proudly pumped her fist in the air as her fellow athletes crowded around her, jumping up and down and cheering.
