Go out at hotspots and get fewer passes. At least according to a recent Airbnb survey, choosing more local and affordable destinations this summer is a travel trend this summer.
The Casablanca Resort and Casino in Mesquite, Nevada are the perfect example.
With its busy years in recent years, the resort has been renovating millions of dollars this summer to meet demand.

Mesquite, Nevada, is located on the Nevada and Arizona border and is about 30 minutes from St. George, Utah.
Andrea Pollus moved from California to Mesquite three years ago.
“I don’t miss the traffic, I don’t miss the price,” Pollus said.
She loves the way she can get the same amenities in a small town, at the same, and even better prices as in the city.

“I think everyone in the last five years has been very hard and still struggles. That’s a good way to take a little break from life… it’s very economical here,” Pollus said.

In addition to the dollar factor, some people choose detour destinations for the atmosphere.
“100% bring people here for golf trips. There are two 18 courses they have, a casino that loves gambling and drinks,” said Corbin T, who is visiting Mesquite.
He came from Arizona this week for the US Open Qualifier. He likes how quiet the mesquite is.
“If you’re looking for something more quiet, you can’t look around, go into every machine, go into every table, fight a lot of people, and if you’re looking to get away from social media, news, something like that, that’s probably the place for you,” Corbin T said.

Mesquite is just an example of a detour.
“That means adding lesser-known destinations to the itinerary,” said Expedia Director Gretel Perera, a spokesman.
Expedia research shows that going to detour destinations is a trend in hot travel this year. Economic uncertainty affects that.

“In the age of us now, people are trying to save money and budgets, especially as summer travel comes, which is a great way to save money,” Perera said.
And Casablanca is keeping up with this trend.
“Most of that comes from traffic we found traveling on I-15… We are in all of the most beautiful and most visited national parks in the United States,” said Justin Moore, CEO of Mesquite Gaming.

And they don’t see this growth die anytime soon.
“We have already invested $25 million in the first year of ownership here in Mesquite, and we are not going to stop there,” Moore said.
In addition to going to the local area this summer, Airbnb research shows that travelers opt for a voluntary, affordable stay within 300 miles of their home this summer. So for the people of Vegas, mesquite is complete within that radius.
