New York Giants running back Devin Singletary (groin) will be available when the Giants host the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
Singletary has missed the past two games, but rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. has been added in that time, paving the way for him to be acquired as perhaps “Wally Pip.”
For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to former New York Yankees first baseman Wally Pipp, who lost his job to a young upstart named Lou Gehrig. Pip initially did not start another game when Gehrig completed his historic streak of 2,130 consecutive games played.
We’re not saying this is the end of Singletary, but rather the beginning of Tracy. Tracy was a fifth-round pick out of Purdue and began his career as a wide receiver at Iowa.
Tracy came on board and basically took over the job for the past two weeks. He rushed for 129 yards on 18 carries against Seattle and totaled 107 yards and a touchdown last week against Cincinnati.
Reporters and fans may think that the Giants could be in for some controversy if Singletary returns. That was broken on Friday when head coach Brian Daboll said Tracy would see significant playing time this Sunday against Philadelphia.
“He’s done a good job and earned it, so he’ll get plenty of playing time,” Daboll said. “Motor, we’ll see how the game goes and how it goes, but Motor will play, Tracy will play, (Eric) Gray will play, we’ll use all three of those guys. ”
Singletary rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns, but averaged only 3.9 yards per carry. He caught 10 passes for 72 yards and Tracy had 11 receptions for 99 yards.
“Tyrone took advantage of his opportunity,” Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said Thursday. “He’s done a great job in the passing game, the screen game and the running game. We’re going to continue to build on that.”
The Giants are averaging just 16.0 points per game this season, so they are looking for their most dynamic player to step forward and play.
This Sunday should be the first game in which stud wideout Malik Nabors returns from concussion protocol and he and Tracy spend meaningful time on the field together.
