For better or worse, Fortnite Create an NPC where creators will abandon scripts and make it freestyle. New tools in Fortnite (UEFN) Unreal Editor allow developers to create their own generated AI-powered NPCs. These audio types, distribution styles and personality traits are all customizable.
Epic demonstrated its technology on Tuesday during its “unrealistic” keynote. The company said the NPC generated responses in real time during the presentation. It was created using “about 20 lines” of rapid text.
The demoed character Mr. Bottons was created solely to persuade players to press the big red button in the room. The AI bot lasted after the presenter asked about environmental signs warning him of pressing the button. “Signs, you say? A mere suggestion from people who lack imagination. After all, the rules are slowly made to be put aside. Would you not agree?”
As impressive, the demo also shows current limitations of the technology. First of all, it’s a turn-tave AI chat, not a live chat with interruptions and overlaps. Additionally, presenters could only speak when they had a button to activate the microphone. After each question, Button pauses for a while to process it. I tried masking this with vocal fillers like “Hmm,” “Ah,” “Hmm.”
Technology is built on top of Darth Vader exterior last month Fortnite: Battle of the Galaxy. Gemini 2.0 Flash has generated a Sidh Lord conversation. This was created using ElevenLabs AI Tech, like the voice of James Earl Jones. (His property approved it.)
How was it? Well, Ai Vader has become a virus… perhaps not the reason Epic wanted. On the bright side, it was not completely left to the aggression ai seinfeld level. But it is widely shared video Dozens showed that they would drop the F bomb. Vader repeated the words in response to the streamer who used “funny” and “shit” at the audio prompt. (Ironically, he then scribbled the players using harsh languages.) Epic pressed Hotfix and promised that it wouldn’t happen again.
Fortnite Creators will be able to create NPCs in the UEFN Editor later this year. You can check out the Mr. Bottons demo below.
