The Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme (PMIS Scheme), announced in Budget 2024-25, aims to provide one young person with internship opportunities for top 500 companies over five years.
As the start of this scheme, a pilot project was launched on October 3, 2024, aimed at providing youth with an internship opportunity of Rs 1.25 lakh.
The scheme offers 12 months paid internships at top Indian companies.
The scheme is aimed at individuals aged 21-24 who are not currently enrolled in a full-time academic program or registered for full-time employment.
Each intern will receive monthly financial support of Rs 5,000, supplemented by one-time financial support of Rs 6,000. Companies are expected to pay 10% of their training and internships from CSR funds.
After launching the app, Finance Minister Sitharaman said, “The government needs to give young people that confidence. Young people need to understand what it takes to join such a top 500 company.”
She urged Indian industry to participate in the great interests of the country’s youth.
“The demographic dividends that exist should be available to ensure that their productivity, their future is better for our youth,” she added.
“This attempt with corporate issues to make the website accessible in all Indian languages is a very good step. Students cannot be limited to English. All languages in India make them even more accessible by launching a mobile app, especially if the student is coming from a non-met city.”
In its July 2024 budget, the BJP-led NDA government announced five different approaches to Viksit Bharat. Among them were measures to promote manufacturing and services through internships.
Internship programs were previously aimed at people who were not fully trained or unable to find opportunities.
