The Environmental Protection Agency is targeting climate technology that automatically turns off the engines of cars when they stop at a red light to save fuel, Functional Agency administrator Lee Zeldin said all drivers “hate.”
“Start/Stop Technology: Companies get a climate participation trophy as cars die at any red light,” Zeldin said in X. “The EPA has approved it.
This feature has become common in new vehicles as a way to save money on gas and reduce emissions.

While technology advocates support it as a climate-friendly initiative, critics find it annoying and question whether it can wear out the car’s batteries and engines more quickly.
Cars usually have buttons that allow the driver to disable the feature.
The EPA does not require stop-start technology, but car manufacturers that employ it are given additional fuel economy credits.

According to Battery Council International, the technology was included in the jump from 65% of vehicles in 2023, 45% in 2021, 9% in 2016 and 1% in 2012.
This feature can improve fuel economy by 4% to 5%, according to previous EPA estimates. Also, as of 2023, it has eliminated 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, BCI said.

An EPA spokesman told the New York Post that the Stop Start system did not show a clear reduction in emissions tests.
