Billionaire Elon Musk may have just been refuted to openly. But it hasn’t stopped his AI company Xai Make flagship Grok 3 models available via API.
It’s been several months since Xai unveiled the Grok 3. The Grok3 is the company’s response to models such as Openai’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini. Grok 3 can analyze images to respond to questions and promote many features to Musk’s social network X, which has not so iconically won Xai in March.
Xai offers two flavors of Grok 3 in its API: Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini have a “inference” feature. The Grok 3 costs $3 (approximately 750,000 words) per million dollars supplied to the model and $15 per million dollars generated by the model. For the Grok 3 Mini, it’s $0.30 per million and $.50 per million output token. The speed versions of the Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini are available for important premiums (Grok 3: $5/m input token, $25/m output token, Grok 3 Mini: $.60/m input token, $4/m output token).
The Grok 3 isn’t exactly cheaper than the competition. Matches Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet pricing. It also offers inference functionality, which is more expensive than Google’s recently released Gemini 2.5 Pro. (Nothing, but Xai has been accused of misleading in the Grok 3 benchmark report.)
As some users of X have pointed out, Grok 3 via Xai’s API also has a smaller context window than the model is said to be able to support. A “context window” refers to the number of tokens that a model can process in a single go. The API was maximized at 131,072 tokens, or about 97,500 words. This is except for the 1 million tokens that Grok 3 claimed to have supported in late February.
When Musk unveiled Grok about two years ago, he pitched the AI model as edgy, filtering and anti-‘awakening’. He told me some of those promises. For example, being told that it is vulgar, Grok and Grok 2 is willing to obligate, spitting out colorful languages that you don’t hear from ChatGpt.
However, GROK models before Grok 3 hedge There is no intersecting about political subjects Specific boundaries. in fact, One study Grok found that he left on topics such as trans rights, diversity programs, and inequality.
Musk criticizes the actions of Grok’s training data (public web pages); Pledge “Take Grok closer to political neutrality.” It is not yet clear whether Xai has achieved that goal and what the outcome will be.
