After telling everyone that the next installment in the Dying Light series, Dying Light: The Beast, would be free for owners of 2021’s Dying Light 2’s $100 Ultimate Edition, Techland has now told fans that that version of the game will be discontinued.
Techland made the yeah, comment on Friday, three days after Dying Light: The Beast was announced during Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live. Dying Light: The Beast began as a premium DLC expansion (dubbed “Story DLC 2”). It was released for Dying Light 2, but the project grew too big, so Poland-based Techland decided to release it as a standalone.
Of course, because this content started out as premium DLC promised to those who bought the Ultimate Edition, Techland felt obligated to give it away for free, and it would have cannibalized sales of the spinoff if value hunters who didn’t own the game purchased either the Ultimate Edition or the $34.49 upgrade unlock that gave the content to the standard version of the game.
Both are currently available on four online marketplaces: Epic Games Store, Steam, Microsoft Store, and PlayStation Store, and according to Techland, these will go on sale from September 30th, but current owners of the game (and presumably anyone who buys before then) won’t lose any content or rights to Dying Light: The Beast.
Dear Pilgrims, we will be removing the Ultimate Edition and the upgrade to the Ultimate Edition for Dying Light 2 Stay Human from all platforms on September 30. Please note: This will not affect players who already own either the Ultimate Edition or the upgrade to the Ultimate Edition. pic.twitter.com/yacjbGEMMz

This is a bit of a clunker for Techland, as we don’t know exactly what Dying Light: The Beast will cost – a news release accompanying the game’s ONL premiere stated that it would be $39.99, but Techland later walked back this statement, saying that the game’s release date and price would be announced at a later date.
What is Dying Light 2: The Beast?
Dying Light 2: The Beast transports players back in time to the original Dying Light, released in 2015, and its protagonist, Kyle Crane. Voiced by original actor Roger Craig Smith, Crane has been imprisoned and subjected to cruel scientific experimentation and research for the past 13 years.
The Beast does not refer to Crane’s mission of revenge, but to a giant monster beyond the forest, and also to Crane’s DNA intertwining with the zombie’s, thereby granting him “beast-like” powers and abilities that he unleashes on his tormentors, and ultimately on the Beast himself.
Dying Light: The Beast will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
