st. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Will Buxton hasn’t been a regular on the IndyCar Circuit in recent years, but that doesn’t mean he needs advice on how to handle his duties with playing Fox this season.
“I don’t think I’m ready,” Buxton said. “You may be more prepared at any time. You could always know more. I know that very well. But I am as prepared as I can.”
So he may not need advice. But we are here to give him it.
I asked some drivers in the series to advise new voices in the series as Buxton leaves behind various Formula 1 broadcast roles (many people who don’t regularly watch F1 probably know him from “Drive to Survive”).
Some drivers played well. They said Buxton didn’t need advice.
“Take all the energy and ideas to the table,” said Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden.
And some people gave at least a bit of advice to native English speakers. This is the sampling:
From six-time series champion Scott Dixon: “He has to win the South Twangue and start accepting American a little more.
Veteran Graham Lahal: “Prepare pork tenderloin for Indy and everything else. It’s quite different from Monaco.”
Scott McLaughlin, Indian driver who turned supercar champion: “Don’t let Hinch and Townsend fool you, they’re bad.”
Felix Rosenqvist: “He has to go out into the Midwest and learn about the roots of American racing. He feels like a big IndyCar fan, so he probably knows more than anyone thinks.”
And from champion Alex Pau: “It’ll be hard for him to catch up with Hinch. Lucky, man.”
We also asked Kevin Harvik, analyst with the NASCAR Cup Series, who retired from Cup Race following the 2023 season.
“I like to hear Will Buxton. I love his opinions. I love everything he does. Being able to bring a fresh face to the IndyCar world and being able to talk about what’s going on will bring more familiar faces from an international perspective than we have here. I think that’s a great addition.”
So what does Buxton think about all of this advice? We played some of these answers for him.
Here’s his response:
“Thank you for the comment,” Buxton said. “I appreciate your advice and I’m really grateful.
“I will do my best to not let you down.”
