History of the Chicago Democratic National Convention
Chicago is Party conferences — most recently the 1996 DNC and, perhaps most famously, the 1968 DNC.
“Chicago in 1968 has been repeatedly recalled as the epitome of disasters like the sinking of the Titanic or the stock market crash of 1929,” said Ron Elving, a senior editor and correspondent at NPR.
At the time, President Lyndon Johnson had announced that he would not run for reelection, Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated, and Vice President Hubert Humphrey was facing off against anti-war Senator Eugene McCarthy in the presidential nomination race.
In 1968, thousands of demonstrators gathered in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention to protest America’s involvement in the Vietnam War and to call for racial equality and an end to poverty.
Protesters and police clashed, with violent images broadcast on television. To show it to the people.
But beyond the venues for the games, 2024 will also see some re-enactments of 1968. (Not just in politics, but in both years, new Planet of the Apes As NPR’s Rachel Treisman points out, these include movies, the Summer Olympics and U.S. exploration of the moon.
As historian Keith O’Leary summed up in April: Posted by X (formerly Twitter):
“Well, there’s unrest in Colombia, there’s an anti-war movement. That may be coincidence, but there’s a guy named Robert Kennedy running for president. [Democratic National Convention] I’m in Chicago. How about this one?”
A few months later, another parallel to 1968 occurred: President Biden announced that he would not run for the nomination.
But while shades of 1968 hang over this week’s convention, particularly in terms of protests and security, the convention itself will be a more formal affair and the candidates are known.
