Marquise “Hollywood” Brown may not make his official debut with the Kansas City Chiefs until the postseason.
The standout wide receiver underwent shoulder surgery and is not expected to play in the regular season. ESPN reported Saturday.Brown underwent surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder and was placed on injured reserve on Friday, meaning he will miss at least four games.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said earlier this week that Brown was “close” to being ready to play, but then changed his tune on Friday when he told reporters Brown is “several months” away from returning.
Brown suffered a dislocated sternoclavicular joint in the Chiefs’ preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 10 and has been sidelined ever since.
The two-time defending Super Bowl champions will face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
The Chiefs have consistently compared Brown’s injury to a similar dislocation suffered by then-Kansas City wide receiver Tyreek Hill in Week 1 of the 2019 season. Hill subsequently missed four weeks, and they didn’t place Brown on injured reserve when they made cuts after training camp, signaling their desire to have him back within that time frame.
Instead, Brown will likely miss several more months due to surgery to repair his shoulder joint.
The rest of the Chiefs’ wide receivers also produced in last week’s season-opening win over the Baltimore Ravens. Second-year pro Rushe Rice had seven catches for 103 yards, first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy had a running and receiving touchdown and versatile backup Justin Watson had a 25-yard reception on his only target in the 27-20 win.
The Chiefs will also be counting on JuJu Smith-Schuster to perform well this week. He was released by the New England Patriots and re-signed with Kansas City, so he only had a couple of practices prior to the Ravens game, which could limit the number of plays Smith-Schuster can run.
