OpenAI is changing ChatGPT’s interface to look like a digital notepad for your projects.
Thursday, OpenAI announced Beta “Canvas” feature for writing and coding. Canvas is different from traditional chatbox interfaces. So it’s tedious to refine and develop ideas without being prompted again and again.

This new feature is ChatGPT’s first major design change since its launch in 2022. OpenAI has been busy with other work, including launching its multimodal model GPT-4o, launching its inference model o1, and raising $6.6 billion in its latest investment round. For now, Canvas is only available to paid subscribers, but OpenAI says it plans to expand access to free users once the beta version ends. If you’re a ChatGPT Plus or Teams user, you can get started by selecting “ChatGPT 4o with Canvas” from the model dropdown. Access for Enterprise and Edu subscribers will be rolled out next week.
From here, simply enter any prompts related to writing or coding, and a new window will open and Canvas will become active. According to OpenAI’s announcement, ChatGPT is trained to recognize specific prompts that trigger Canvas. When creating help, users can highlight specific parts of text and click “ask ChatGPT” to edit or ask specific questions about the highlighted text.
There are also shortcuts in the bottom left corner to suggest edits, reduce length, change reading level, correct grammar, and add emojis. The ChatGPT format will remain in the left sidebar in case you want to continue the conversation.

For coding, Canvas works similarly by recognizing coding-related prompts that trigger new windows. Shortcuts include reviewing your code, adding logs, adding comments, fixing bugs, and porting it to another programming language by translating it to another programming language (JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP). If you make a mistake, you can press the Back button to revert to the previous version. When you’re done, simply close the window and return to the regular ChatGPT interface. To find your project again, simply click on the module saved in your chat history.
