Last night at the Democratic National Convention, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont called on Americans to support Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for president.
Simple enough? Well, maybe not.
Any keen observer knows that Sanders has a very tense relationship with the Democratic establishment, and so far he has refrained from praising Harris’ campaign.
Meanwhile, Sanders’ long-standing constituencies of young people, minorities and progressives are among the weaker points in President Joe Biden’s coalition, leading many Democrats to call for replacing him.
Now, with 75 days until the election, these same Democrats are betting that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz can shore up those key factions. And they’re turning to Bernie for help.
With that in mind, Playbook co-author and Deep Dive host Ryan Lizza interviewed Sanders on CNN-Politico Grill to get a more honest take from the Harris campaign than we’ll hear in his DNC speech.
During the conversation, they discussed whether they think Joe Biden should have stepped down in the first place, how the Democratic Party can win back young people, minorities and progressives, which parts of Harris’ policies they agree with and how they think Harris needs to move a little more in their direction to win.
