A new version of the Angel wallet draining tool, known as AngelX, is now in circulation and supports Toncoin (TON) and Tron (TRX), according to a news release from cryptocurrency cybersecurity firm BlockAid.
BlockAid said AngelX represents a significantly increased threat severity compared to previous versions, as attackers have now shifted their focus from certified blockchains to less mature networks, the company said.
“They feel that these chains lack strong security tools and support, making them less defensible against attacks,” BlockAid said in a statement.
AngelX’s popularity accelerates rapidly
This new version of AngelX was released on August 31st and was detected by BlockAid to have been deployed in over 300 malicious decentralized applications (DApps) in four days. BlockAid believes that the adoption rate of AngelX has doubled almost daily during this period, accelerating the growth of this malware.
“This spike indicates a significant increase in malicious activity and positions AngelX as one of the most aggressive wallet drainers in recent months,” BlockAid concluded.
Cryptocurrency or wallet drainers are a type of malware that targets cryptocurrency wallets by tricking victims into agreeing to malicious transactions. Once tricked, the perpetrators steal everything in the account.
BlockAid was able to access an instance of the AngelX control panel and evaluate its “highly customizable configuration options,” a tool that purportedly showed that significant resources had been put into making setting up the scam easier than before.
The news follows reports in January that hackers were specifically targeting high-profile verified X-accounts to promote crypto scams and drop links to money drainers. Last month, traders lost roughly $1 million in an hour after investing in Solana-based meme coin MBAPPE (SOL), which was revealed to be a scam token promoted on French soccer superstar Kylian Mbappe’s hacked X-account.
