Those who have hopes for an animated “Smallville” sequel series may want to ease their expectations. The CW Superman prequel series aired 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011, giving Tom Welling’s journey as Clark Kent to the hero he was destined to. Also, Michael Rosenbaum came to know as Lex Luther halfway through. Both actors were expected to return to the proposed sequel series, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to happen anytime soon.

In a recent episode of “Talkville” podcastAlfred Gough, co-creator of the series, provided an update on the status of the project. I’ve first heard about the follow-up to “Small Building,” animated in 2021, but there were few official updates. Gough pours cold water into the situation, explaining that the upcoming big-screen “Superman” reboot from director James Gunn is now a priority for Warner Bros. This is what he had to say about it:

“I think the problem with most projects being developed in the studio and in the network is a change of government. Warner has clearly gone through a lot. The fact that they are in the process of rebooting Superman again makes me sad, and I think ours is slowly moving away from the table.

James Gunn’s “Superman” doesn’t just reboot a single franchise. Lynch pin for the entire DC Universe reboot. There’s a lot to do with this movie. In fact, it is most important to Warner Bros.’s future as a studio. So it’s unlikely that the studio wants a competing project focused on Man of Steel, currently under development. Therefore, “Small Building” fans need to exercise patience.

Smallville sequel series can’t clash with James Gunn’s Superman

Tom Welling suggested that things look good in the 2022 “Smallville” animation series. Honestly, many things have changed since then, including taking over as head of DC Studios with Peter Saffron. The CW was also purchased by Nexstar, leading to the end of the arrow. “Superman & Lois” also concluded the run after four seasons.

“All I can share is that it’s a great idea,” Michael Rosenbaum said in an interview with Screen rant About the 2024 series. ” [Gough] and mile [Millar]creator of “Smallville”, backs us. We want to do this when it’s the right time. Pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and now is not the right time. ”

The creators of the show previously suggested they didn’t want to revisit “Smallville” despite the fact that the actors are trying to advance this animated series. As it stands, it’s not something Warner Bros has ever promised to make, and you’ll have to sign on to move forward. who knows? If “Superman” is a huge hit, then maybe they’ll be open to doing it as the biggest exclusive. Streamers like Amazon would pay top dollar for that, as they did with “Batman: Caped Crusader.” The table has options.

All of this means that the show isn’t dead. After all, “Small Building” was revived as a comic after being cancelled. Isn’t that the case for an animation show? It just has to be right timing, and it’s not the case now.

You can grab “Smallville: The Complete Series” on Amazon’s Blu-ray or DVD.
