US Vice President JD Vance has urged India to remove non-tariff barriers, open up more markets and increase American energy and military equipment purchases. Speaking on Tuesday, he outlined the vision of a strong bond between the two countries, ensuring a 21st century of prosperity and peace.
In his speech, Vance praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “special person” and emphasized the importance of India and the United States working together to tackle global challenges. He said, “The future of the 21st century will be shaped by the strength of the US-India partnership,” adding that while successful collaborations could lead to prosperity, failure could have dire consequences for humanity.
Along with his Indian wife Usha Chirukuri and their three children, Vance arrived in Delhi on Monday amid concerns over US customs policy. He has extensive discussions with Modi, with both leaders acknowledging advances in bilateral trade negotiations.
Vance encouraged India to provide greater access to American goods and services, including defense and energy products. He also highlighted the possibility of cooperation in exploring India’s natural resources, such as offshore gas reserves and important minerals, and proposed removing trade barriers to strengthen energy ties.
The Vice President expressed optimism about deepening defense cooperation, urging India to purchase more US military equipment. He also welcomed India’s recent budget announcement to amend India’s nuclear liability law.
Vance emphasized the importance of energy security for Indian AI ambitions and called for joint efforts to achieve energy domination. He concluded by highlighting the mutual benefits of a strong US-India partnership, particularly in promoting economic growth and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
