Cameos, variations, fourth wall breaking and R-rated moments make Deadpool vs Wolverine an extremely satisfying cinematic experience and a great film that is a must-see. So, what are you waiting for, bub?
plot
Deadpool’s peaceful life is disrupted when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) recruits him to help protect the multiverse, and he soon teams up with his future ally Wolverine to complete the mission and save the world from an existential threat.
Movie Review [Warning: Spoilers alert!]
Ryan Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson/Deadpool after six years, while Hugh Jackman returns as Logan/Wolverine after seven years. Ryan Reynolds is not only involved as the foul-mouthed mercenary, but also as a writer and producer. Although the movie is R-rated, many laughs were expected, and they were delivered. With Ryan as one of the writers, we can only imagine the jokes that happened behind the scenes.
The story continues from Deadpool 2 and Logan, which were released in 2018 and 2017 respectively. It is highly recommended to watch the previous Mutants and Deadpool movies. If you have seen the previous works of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you will be able to find many references to movies and TV series in the movie. The story begins with Deadpool fighting TVA soldiers last seen in the Loki TV series. An impressively choreographed scene follows, where dancers dressed in Deadpool costumes show off their best dance moves to NSYNC’s Bye Bye Bye, which rocketed the song to the top of the Spotify charts.
Ryan and Hugh are giving it their all in this film, the 34th in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Reynolds makes the audience laugh with his humor, while Jackman brings more seriousness to the role than ever before. Many of the other stars from the previous Deadpool and Wolverine films return, but the overall focus remains on Deadpool and Wolverine as they once again save the world, and this time the stakes are high as they face off against a villain named Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin.
Emma did a really good job in this role. I really hope we see Cassandra again in future movies. It’s a multiverse saga, so anything can happen. There are other surprises in store, like returning villains and friends coming back after years. I won’t give away any spoilers here, as naming them would likely ruin the experience for you. There are also some surprise stars who have never been seen in a Marvel movie before, but who have been teased many times.
Other actors featured include Matthew Macfadyen and Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlyle, both of whom have important characters but very limited screen time, as well as other stars such as Karan Soni as Dopinder, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shiori Kutsuna as Yukio, and Stefan Kapicic as the voice of Colossus. Randall Reeder as Buck and Lewis Tan as Rusty/Shutterstar.
While the surprise appearance is great, the moment is brief and it begs the question of why surprises haven’t happened in other Marvel movies. There was one character in particular that I would like to see return in the future, but this is a personal preference. Watch the movie and comment on the social media posts for this article and I’ll see if your guess is correct. Cameos were promised and Deadpool and Wolverine definitely lived up to the expectations.
There were quite a few Easter eggs in this movie. I highly recommend watching the movie a couple of times to really find them. Many are reminiscent of other Marvel movies, and some even hint at future movies. I encourage readers to look for these Easter eggs and share what you find in the comments.
Most of the film takes place in the Void, which, if you recall, was Loki’s location and where mutants ended up after being pruned. Although Loki doesn’t appear, there are plenty of connections to other films, making this film definitely worth a second watch.
The film is rated R and certainly deserves that rating, with language and violence that surpasses that of any action movie. But we didn’t come just for the violence and language. We came to see how Marvel would connect the dots between the Mutants movie and the previous entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the next film still months away, both continuity and moving forward are equally important.
The initial trailers for the film didn’t give away much in the way of spoilers, but as the months have passed, many surprises have been spoiled. What I have observed over the past four months is the amount of chatter on social media, leaked photos, and what is of major concern is the amount of leaks that have been pretty accurate regarding the appearance of characters in the film.
The soundtrack to this film is generally fantastic and can be found on Spotify at the link below.
The film ends without knowing if the storyline has actually been integrated into the Multiverse Saga or the Sacred Timeline, and whether that’s for teaser purposes remains to be seen.
The film has a post-credits scene that, while entertaining, doesn’t feel like it hints at the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, nor does it give the audience a sneak peek at what’s next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As this is the only film released by Marvel Studios, I was hoping for a sneak peek at what’s coming next year or even a reference to the next Avengers film, but there was no such sneak peek at the end.
I would rate this movie 4 out of 5. The movie starts off pretty warm and action packed, but cools down as the story progresses towards the end. Some may think that it would have been better to have made it a Deadpool vs Wolverine movie, as the main scenes were about the fight between Deadpool and Wolverine. Although this movie takes place in the Multiverse Saga, it is questionable whether it will actually appear in future installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Overall, the film is a nostalgic reunion of fan-favorite heroes and villains, with Reynolds and Jackman delivering star performances worthy of joining the Avengers. Surprise appearances add to the nostalgic moments of joy, and hopefully this won’t be the last we see of some of the heroes and villains. We hope some of the stars return in future productions. Deadpool and Wolverine delivers 2 hours and 7 minutes of excitement, and I can see both Deadpool and Wolverine making it to the top of the 2024 movie charts. I grew up on the animated X-Men TV series, and Wolverine has always been my favorite Marvel character. This film provided a suit that was faithful to the comics, and I’m really grateful for that.
Watch the movie at your local cinema and do your best not to spoil the movie for your friends. If possible, watch the movie in 3D to enjoy it the right way.
