Tiger Woods to play Genesis Invitational, his first PGA Tour event since July

3 Min Read

Tiger Woods committed to playing the Genesis Invitational at Tory Pines in San Diego on Friday, returning to one of his favourite venues for his first PGA Tour start since the British Open last July I did.

Woods will be playing 18 holes, which have been competing since dealing with microintakes in September and then relaxing his sixth lower back surgery. He will compete in just over a week after his mother, Kultida Woods, who passed away on Tuesday at age 80.

Woods was the host of Genesis Invitational and moved from the Riviera Country Club due to a wildfire that destroyed the surrounding Los Angeles Pacific Palisade community.

He never won the Riviera, but his eight wins at the Tory Pines include the 2008 US Open. The public course along the Pacific is also his latest top 10 finish on the PGA Tour, tied for 9th place at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open.

Genesis Invitational is a signature event for limited fields that have not been cut. Woods hasn’t played four rounds at the event since last year’s Masters. He shot 82-77 over the weekend and finished last among those who made the cut. He played three other major championships last year and missed a cut every time.

The 49-year-old Woods, a 15-time major champion, has 82 PGA Tour victories, and is tied with the most Sneads to date. His final victory was at the 2019 Zozo Championship.

He missed everything in 2021 after a rollover car accident in Los Angeles in February of that year, and suffered a serious injury to his right lower leg.

Woods skipped the unofficial event he hosted in December, The Hero World Challenge, but he held an exhibition with his son Charlie and competed in the indoor TGL league.
